Jesus said we will be known by our fruit (Matthew 7:17–20), and Paul shows us in the church at Corinth that it’s possible to be gifted, active, and still spiritually immature (1 Corinthians 3:1–3).
So what does real maturity look like?

Jesus teaches that love is the defining mark of a disciple (John 13:35). Paul explains that without love, even the greatest spiritual gifts mean nothing (1 Corinthians 13:1–3). Love is patient and kind, it rejoices with truth, and it becomes the evidence of a life being transformed by God (1 Corinthians 13:4–7; 1 John 4:7–8).
At the center of spiritual growth is not striving—but abiding. Jesus says that apart from Him we can do nothing, but when we remain in Him, we bear lasting fruit (John 15:4–5).
